CALLING ALL YOTES

Calling for coyotes is arguably one of the most exciting aspects of predator hunting. Why? It is different every time. Figuring out what the coyotes are responding to is part of the appeal.

How do you find coyotes? In addition to scouting (look for tracks, scat, and prey) and glassing, howling is a great way to locate coyotes before heading out to your stand. Kuechel typically does this from the road or trail before trekking in further. If he hears a response to the howl, he can then develop a plan to put pressure on the coyotes in the area to bring them into the call.

PREDATOR HUNTING GEAR: TURN PREDATOR INTO PREY

There are nearly endless options for predator hunting gear with countless feature sets to meet any budget. Savage ambassador and hunting guide, Kyle Kuechel of Yuma, AZ shared his favorite pieces of critical gear, what to look for and why.

Semi-auto or bolt action? Talk to any coyote hunter and they will tell you what they prefer! Kuechel has used both with success. A semi-auto like the MSR 10 Hunter is great for fast shots and quick follow ups. Kuechel prefers a bolt action like his 110 Apex Predator. “I tend to be less of a cowboy with a bolt action. I know I can’t get a follow up shot right away with a bolt action, so I take my time and I take better shots,” says Kuechel.

If you are new to predator hunting and do not want to pull the trigger on a predator-specific rifle, almost any smaller caliber deer rifle should do the trick.

If you are looking for a purpose-built predator rifle, here are a few things to look for:

  • Heavy barrel – if you need to take follow up shots or have multiple coyotes come in at once, a heavy barrel will not heat as fast allowing you to take multiple accurate shots
  • Threaded for suppressor – many coyote hunters prefer to use a suppressor, so a threaded muzzle is a must.
  • Camo – Concealing yourself and your rifle is the best way to melt into the terrain to avoid a coyote’s sharp eyes.

“You need to have a rifle that you can count on. Having confidence in your shot is paramount,” says Kuechel.

ADVICE FOR NEW HUNTERS

It can be daunting for a new hunter to begin. Kuechel offers three pieces of advice for anyone getting into predator hunting:

  1. Find a mentor. If you have never been coyote hunting before, the best thing you can do is to find someone in your area with experience who can teach you and help you get started with the necessary gear. Most hunters are thrilled share their passion and to take a new hunter under their wing.
  2. Mix it up. Every hunter gets stuck in a rut from time to time. If you can’t find the coyotes or they are not responding to calls, you need to do something different. Kuechel has seen too many hunters focus on one area where they have killed coyotes before or fixate on one technique of calling. Flip the script and get out of that rut.
  3. Don’t be afraid to mess up. Coyotes are smart and adaptable animals. You must continuously try different things to trigger a reaction from a coyote, and inevitably you will try things that don’t work. You will forget a critical piece of gear. You will miss a shot. The weather will change. Don’t let any of these challenges discourage you. “I’ve learned from my mistakes every single trip,” says Kuechel. Successful predator hunters are just as adaptable as their prey.

RIFLE CHOICE

Not all rifles are created equal, and if your goal is to bang steel or punch lungs beyond 700 yards, there are some things you need to consider. The NRA (National Rifle Association) defines long range shooting as 1,000 yards. However, mid-range targets are defined as 600 yards, so anything over 700 yards will be considered long range to cover our bases. Some top long range rifle calibers are the 6.5 PRC, .300 PRC, .28 Nosler, .308 Win., and .300 Win. Mag. Of course, there are others; these are just the tip of the iceberg — proven downrange shooters that work as well at clanging steel as they do at putting big game on the ground.

After deciding on a caliber, you can’t head to the sporting goods store and select, say, a .300 Win. Mag, and expect to be a long-range killer. Some rifles are built for long range precision, and if long range shooting is your ultimate goal, there are features you’ll want.
